Hight School History Class Case Study

About this project

Overview

Volunteered at a local high school and offer to help the 11th grade analyze its performance on the final exam for World History class. Two teachers requested to make a Power BI report to visualize the final exam results.

About the Dataset

The dataset is composed the final exam grades of 30 students. Each class had 15 students who took the History final exam. Both Mrs. Smith and Mr. Jones provided their students final exam grades in excel sheets.

Challenge Prompt (Recommended Analysis)

The two teachers, Mrs. Jones and Mr. Smith, have requested that I make a Power BI report with the following visualizations:

  1. Multi-row card showing the average score for each class.
  2. Donut chart showing the percent breakdown of all students by letter grade, with letter grades calculated as follows:
    Test Score Letter Grade
  • Score greater than 90 A
  • 80 less than equal to Score less than 90 B
  • 70 less than equal to Score less than 80 C
  • 60 less than equal to Score less than 70 D
  • Score less than 60 F
3. Stacked column chart showing the count of students by letter grade by teacher.

ETL and Data Modeling

Mrs. Jones and Mr. Smith each provided an excel sheet with their student’s final exam grades. The data was loaded into Power BI and transformed in Power Query so that I may prepare the data for the visualizations.

Insights

  1. The multi-row card viz displays the average test score for each teacher. We can conclude that Mrs. Jones’ history class had better test results with a 78.93% average score compared to Mr. Smith's 70.07% average score.
  2. The donut chart shows the percent breakdown of all students by letter grade. We can determine that 68.13% of students received a letter grade of C or better.
  3. The stacked column chart shows the count of students by letter grade by teacher. We can rule that Mrs. Jones' class had a higher count of students scoring a C or better.
