GLOBAL BURDEN OF DISEASE (GBD) STUDY - MORTALITY RESULT (1970 - 2010)

Summary:

The larger GBD Study estimates the burden of diseases, injuries, and risk factors globally and for 21 regions between 1970 and 2010. The study was implemented as a collaboration of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) as the coordinating center, University of Queensland, Harvard School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, University of Tokyo, Imperial College London, and WHO.

The smaller dataset I worked on provides the number of deaths and mortality rates across 187 countries, disaggregated by age group and gender, for 5 specific years (1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, and 2010).

Key Findings

  1. Mortality was higher among males (128 million deaths) compared to females (109 million deaths).

  2. Mortality trend showed an increase in the number of deaths from 1970 to 2010

  3. The highest number of deaths was recorded among the elderly (aged 70 years and above), followed by children under 5 (aged 1 - 4 years). Adolescents (aged 10 - 14 years) had the lowest number of deaths within the 5-year period under review).

  4. India recorded the highest number of deaths, followed by China and the United States, while Marshall Islands had the lowest number.

My Thoughts

While I enjoyed working on this project, I would have appreciated a more robust dataset that includes data on a number of risk factors (behavioral / lifestyle, environmental /occupational, dietary) that could have contributed to mortality.
