Road Accidents Breakdown

About this project

Key Insights: ◾ Dry roads had the most casualties with a total of just over 279,000 ◾ Daylight had accidents with the most casualties and vehicles involved ◾ Almost 65% of casualties happened on roads where the speed limit was 30mph ◾ For wet or damp roads, Friday and Tuesday saw accidents with the most casualties ◾ Rural areas saw more casualties during snow and frost/ice road conditions

Some of these insights surprised me a bit. I expected that higher casualties would have happened at night time, and for wet road conditions to have a higher rate as well. However, that was clearly not the case. Dry roads and Daylight have the highest total of casualties, which was very surprising to me. The biggest surprise for me was about 65% of casualties happened on 30mph roads. I've always heard that higher speeds are what cause the most harm. But this shows us a different perspective.

Another factor I've thought of is whether COVID restrictions starting to become more lenient in 2021 had any effect on the number of accidents. With businesses starting to lift restrictions, such as: mask mandates and capacity limits, everyone might have felt the excitement of things going back to "normal".
