Looking for new real world data to explore?

Ready to get into the championship mindset for March Madness?

We have just what you need, including another chance to win a free all-access membership to Maven!

We've just added another fun data set to the Data Playground, with career basketball stats for Michael Jordan and LeBron James.

This dataset is perfect for exploring & analyzing metrics and then using visualizations to highlight the comparisons, so fire up your favorite BI tools (Excel, MySQL, Power BI, Tableau, etc.) and dig in!

To go along with this release, we’re launching the Jordan vs LeBron Challenge and giving away a free all-access membership to the winner.

We’ll share more about the challenge details below, but first let’s talk about the data…

About the dataset

  • This dataset contains 4 tables
  • 2 tables include their regular season stats, one for each player
  • 2 tables include their playoff stats, one for each player
  • Each record in all 4 tables represents one game
  • Records contain details about their age, team, minutes played, and offensive and defensive stats for that game

How to play the Jordan vs LeBron Challenge

For the Jordan vs LeBron Challenge, you’ll be answering the ultimate question…

Who is the greatest basketball player of all time?

This debate is usually left to the sports media, but now the data analysts are taking over!

Your task is to declare Michael Jordan or LeBron James as the G.O.A.T. and back up your decision with data visualization.

Here’s how to submit your entry:

  • Follow Maven Analytics on LinkedIn
  • Share a LinkedIn post that contains both a direct @ mention to @Maven Analytics, and the hashtag #jordanvslebronchallenge (you can still play if you already follow Maven)
  • In your post, share an image that highlights your decision along with the analysis to justify it (it must be a single image)
  • Tag, mention, and invite your connections to play along

How to win

In honor of March Madness, we will be doing a bracket-style tournament for this month’s data challenge.

A sweet sixteen of tournament entrants will be chosen from the challenge submissions. From there, we’ll be reducing the pool to the elite eight, the final four, and finish with the championship game, declaring the challenge winner!

What you can win

As part of the Jordan vs LeBron Challenge, we'll be giving away 4 all-access Maven memberships completely free of charge.

The winner will receive an annual membership, and the rest of the final four will receive one month memberships, giving them access to all of our Excel, Power BI, Tableau, and SQL courses, as well as our ongoing Machine Learning series, all with direct support and coaching from our expert instructors.

No purchase is necessary to participate. As always, this challenge is open to both current Maven subscribers and new students who have no relationship with Maven.

Check out the official rules below...
